Holding tanks

Holding tanks in RVs are special tanks that are either built into the vehicle or mounted under the floor. These tanks are used for storing blackwater (wastewater from the toilet) and graywater (wastewater from sinks and showers). Each type of waste water is kept in separate tanks to manage them more efficiently and hygienically.

Some RVs, especially those with showers or washing machines, might have an additional tank specifically for that wastewater. Inside the RV, there’s usually an LED display that shows the level of each tank, so you know when they need to be emptied.

All these tanks typically drain to a single external hookup point. This makes it easier to empty them when you’re at a dump station. Holding tanks are a common feature in American RVs, and almost every RV produced in the U.S. comes equipped with them. They’re essential for managing wastewater, especially when traveling or camping in areas without sewage hookups.
