Towed vehicle
A towed vehicle, often humorously referred to as a “toad,” is a car or other small vehicle that’s towed behind a motorhome. This setup is particularly popular among RV users in the United States and Canada. The idea is to have a more convenient and maneuverable mode of transportation available when the motorhome is parked and set up at a campground.
Motorhomes, especially those that are quite large (like 40 or 45 feet long), can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces such as supermarket parking lots or city streets. Having a towed vehicle provides the flexibility to leave the motorhome parked and connected to utilities at the campground while still being able to travel around the area, run errands, or visit attractions in the smaller vehicle. This smaller vehicle is also referred to as a “dinghy” in RV parlance. The use of a towed vehicle adds convenience and mobility to the RV camping experience, especially for those with larger motorhomes.
