Brake controller
A brake controller is a device that helps manage the electric brakes on a trailer. It’s powered by the battery of the vehicle towing the trailer. How does it work? When you press the brake pedal in your vehicle, the brake lights turn on. The brake controller senses this and sends power to the trailer’s brakes through a seven-way plug at the back of your vehicle.
Inside the trailer’s brake drums are electromagnets. When the controller sends power to these magnets, it activates the trailer’s brakes. This is super helpful in making sure both your vehicle and the trailer slow down together safely.
You can adjust the brake controller to change how much braking power goes to the trailer. It also has a manual option that lets you activate the trailer brakes on their own, without using the vehicle’s brakes. Some fancier models even have G-force sensors. These sensors can tell when your vehicle is slowing down quickly and automatically apply the trailer brakes to help out.
