Solar Panel

Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic panels or PV panels, can be installed on the roof of an RV. These panels are designed to capture sunlight and convert it into electrical power, specifically slightly more than 12 volts DC (between 12.8 to 13 volts). This makes them ideal for charging the house batteries of the RV.

The use of solar panels is particularly beneficial when the RV is not connected to an external power source (shore power), the vehicle’s engine is off, and there’s no generator available. By harnessing solar energy, these panels provide a renewable and eco-friendly way to keep the house batteries charged, ensuring that the electrical systems within the RV remain operational.

The size of photovoltaic cells used on RVs typically measures around 24 inches by 36 inches. Each of these panels can produce between 100 to 120 watts of power, depending on factors like sunlight intensity and panel efficiency. This setup is a practical solution for maintaining power supply in an RV, especially during extended trips or while camping in remote areas without access to traditional power sources.
